Focus on ME:  Our monthly groups are “open topic” support groups facilitated by a therapist or coach.  This month we are led by Rona Hitlin-Mason, LPC, a therapist practicing in Herndon, Virgina.  See her bio below.

You do not need to go through a difficult time like separation and divorce by yourself.  Are you anxious or depressed about a possible separation or divorce?  Are you having difficulty communicating with your spouse, or former spouse?  Are the children having challenges in their lives?  Are you showing signs of anxiety or depression?  Or maybe you’re already divorced, and have lingering challenges.  Maybe you just want to better understand the emotional stages of separation and divorce.  Bring your questions, challenges, doubts and concerns, and let’s tackle them together.  No matter what stage you are at in this process, there is help.  Emotions are not linear…and neither is success.  Join us, and let’s talk it over.

This month’s therapist:  Rona Hitlin-Mason, LPC also holds Masters degrees in Counseling and Development and Accounting, and a Post-Master’s Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy.  She strongly believes that you have the strength and skills to weather this transition in your life.  And she finds it an honor to accompany people on their journey to self-acceptance and relief of symptoms.

* Focus Groups Membership Package:  $60.00 for six months, which lets you attend attend all “Focus” groups at no additional charge (a $210 savings) within your membership period.  Attend as many times as you wish during your membership period to gain support and knowledge.  We will generally offer three Focus groups each month, one each focusing on the legal, money or “me” aspects of separation and divorce.

“If one dream should fall and break into a thousand pieces, never be afraid to pick one of those pieces up and begin again.”
— Flavia Weedn, “Flavia and the Dream Maker, Flavia.com

This quote describes what we often feel when we face the possibility of separation or divorce…like our dream has shattered and the pieces are lying on the floor, in ruins.  But it is not so.  Through support, solid knowledge upon which to base your decisions and lay out your course of action, and time, new dreams emerge.  We have seen this happen time and again.  It may not feel like it right now.  That is okay.  Give yourself time.

If you are facing separation or divorce, please consider attending our next workshop in Rockville, Maryland, on September 17, 2011, at Universities at Shady Grove.  Details here. You will hear from a family law attorney, financial expert and therapist about the legal, financial and emotional aspects of divorce.  A divorce coach will also help you put it all together and come up with your next steps, whatever they are for you.

We believe better knowledge leads to better choices.  And this workshop is all about helping you receive better knowledge.  Attending does not mean you will divorce.   Attending means you will have solid knowledge should divorce be in your future.

We wish you well on your journey.

Planning Concerns of Divorcing Couples – Why is it important for you to understand the basics of divorce law?

By Linda Black, ChFC, CRPC

Registered Representative of LifeMark Securities Corp.

“While divorce is certainly a time of emotional turmoil, it’s a time of financial upheaval as well. The financial change brought about by divorce can be particularly devastating to families with children and to older couples who have assigned the career duties to one spouse and the homemaking duties to the other.

When seeking a divorce, you should become familiar with the major topics: legal fees, marital property versus separate property, alimony, debt, retirement plans, property settlement, taxation, budgeting, and, if you have children, child custody and child support. You should also consider risk management, and, if you’re older, Social Security.
By becoming knowledgeable about these areas, you can provide your attorney (if any) with a complete and accurate outline of your wishes regarding the divorce settlement, and you will be able to make an informed decision before signing your divorce agreement.

You’ll need to think about a few other questions as well once you’ve provided your attorney with a basic checklist of information. Consider the following:

• Which assets do you really want, and which are you willing to assign to your spouse?
• How do you feel about the family home? Do you feel strongly about living there, or should it be sold or allotted to your spouse?
• With respect to the children (if any), what are your wishes regarding custody, visitation, and child support?
• Do you earn enough money to adequately support yourself, or should alimony be considered?
• Will you have sufficient liquidity to pay the debt on whatever assets you keep?
• What are the income tax consequences of your decisions regarding property disposition?
• Regarding a family business, does your state value assets at the time of separation, settlement, divorce, or some other time?”

Would you like to hear more from Linda about divorce and finances?  She has an upcoming class, MONEY TALK:  Women’s Financial Education Series, at Shenandoah University in Lansdowne, VA, September – November 2011.  Read more at Linda’s website.

Linda is a past presenter at River BaNC, our separation and divorce workshops, currently held in Ashburn, Virginia and Rockville, Maryland.  We discuss the basic legal, financial and emotional/parenting aspects of separation and divorce.  In Ashburn, VA, we also cover the local real estate market.  As time permits, we discuss the mortgage market and other targeted topics from time to time. Our upcoming workshops are:

  • July 23, 2011, Rockville, MD, 8:15 AM to 1:15 PM
